A Return to Rawson's Neck

Truth to tell, although I've been thoroughly enjoying all my seaside plein air days, I was glad to spend today in the studio. A day without sunscreen running down into my eyes was most welcome.

The question became, of course, what to paint? It seemed about time to re-visit Rawson's Neck. After a lot of on-site work, maybe I could do it justice? So I drove up past Del's filling station, rounded the hill past Soper's farm stand, and descended to Rawsonport. From there I drove out onto the neck, and imagined the scene.

Here's what I came up with.

Like all the other recent work, it's a study, 8" x 12", 20x30cm. It needs lots of fiddling, but it was so wet by late this afternoon that I durst not touch it any more. In a day or two I'll finish the troubling bits. In any event, you can see that it was a nice day on the neck...and between my ears.

B.T. will be pleased to know that I have a 12" clear plastic T-square on order. When it comes, the horizons may finally get better.

Marc Dalessio

Marc Dalessio is one of my very favorite artists. We are sporadically in contact, and he's been generous in recommending my overseas workshops.

At the moment he is about to open a show at Grenning Gallery, Sag Harbor, New York.

Marc Dalessio Solo Show | June 25th - July 13th

If you find yourself anywhere near Sag Harbor, this show is a MUST.

Aside from the fact that I'm a huge fan of his work, especially his small panels, he is a tremendously knowledgeable fellow who could not be more generous in sharing his insights with his blog followers. When I first started blogging my aim was to try to be as open and helpful as Marc. I'm still trying.

Speaking Littorally

As I remarked to a friend today, I've been painting so much along the Maine littoral that I'm becoming deliquescent.

In the last post, I wrote of painting No. 2 from last Tuesday's Todd Bonita workshop. I said I'd post a photo of it. It, like all the others in this post, is 8" x 12", 20x30cm. I had intended to punch it up a bit, and may still, but here it is in case I don't.

The next one is from last Thursday, painted at Ogunquit with Tony Bevilacqua (who did a nicer painting than mine).

Yesterday (Sunday) Nick and I were at Fort Foster, Gerrish Island, in Kittery, Maine. The fort was one of several which guarded the approaches to the harbor at Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Today I went to Marginal Way, in Ogunquit. Here's this morning's study. It still has a bit of fiddling left to do.

Rawson's Corners

I received this email the other morning. At first I thought it was from Rod Serling, but he's dead...or is he? The message I received went like this:

Hi Donald-

I found myself driving around a few nights ago. The house AC was busted and it was too hot to sleep. Somehow I found myself in Rawson's Corners. All the houses were quiet and dark and I set a few dogs barking and figured I'd be better off returning in the daytime. I saw a sign for the highway and as I left town I came across Del's filling station (closed). Perhaps you know the place. Well, I sketched it from memory with my coffee the next morning and worked-up a grisaille today. We'll see what emerges.

Heck if I can remember how to get back there.

Avoiding the Subject

Yesterday I joined Todd's final class of his current session, as a spectator. He'd scheduled the class for the Wells Preserve at Laudholm Farm (link) in Wells, Maine. It's an ideal place for a class, complete with bathrooms(!). There are buildings to paint, acres of fields, and many trails. We stayed pretty close to the main house, where there are picnic tables, because the students all brought wonderful food for this last outing.

There was, however, a downside to this location. There was no sea to be seen! I've been so fixated with painting along the Maine coast these last couple of weeks that the idea of a regular landscape wasn't as appealing.

So, while Todd began his class with a demonstration, I skulked off to the deep shade of a copper beech. There I set about painting a moonlit sea. I managed to get some sense of the effect I wanted and I knocked it into shape this morning, back in the studio. (Study, 8"x12", 20x30cm).

By then it was time to chow down. After delicious, warm, baby ribs, some small sandwiches, and then some brownies, I felt fortified enough to attempt study No. 2.

This one isn't ready to post, but it's the view that Todd was painting in his demonstration. Because I didn't want to be in the way, I went and looked at the motif for a bit, then repaired to the dark shade to paint it. I'll try to post it on Friday (I'm off plein air painting tomorrow, at Ogunquit, with new Instagram friends. Tomorrow night I'll try to post some photos of our outing).

Todd's class also had present a couple who are new collectors of his work. They are visiting New England from Atlanta. As I painted during the day we spent a good bit of time chatting. It was they who goaded me into making a third study, starting in mid-afternoon. For this one I actually faced the motif I had chosen to paint. Go figure. I hope it conveys some of the haziness of the afternoon light. (Study, 8" x 12", 20x30cm).

Tomorrow will be a good painting day. I hope you'll be out there.

No Lighthouse

Portland Head, Cape Elizabeth

Portland Head, in Maine, is famous for its iconic lighthouse. Its very status is why I turned my easel ten degrees toward the sea and painted the sea ledge instead.

Of course it's just a study, 8"x12" (20x30cm). One of these days I may paint a larger one in the studio. But for now, with the sun shining and the weather in the 70s, it's time to be outside.

For Sale, in Ogunquit

Ogunquit, Maine has long been the haunt of painters, beginning in the late 19th-century. Today it is still a go-to place for artists. There is a lively gallery scene and the well-known Ogunquit Museum of American Art. The museum encourages artists to paint, not only in Ogunquit and along Marginal Way, but even within the museum's grounds.

Their major fund-raiser is scheduled for August 23rd, and I've just dropped off the new 16x20, Rockbound, for the auction. Why not raid the piggy bank and bid?!

So bid---and score a bargain, while supporting a worthwhile cause. Do it!!
